I've realized that sometimes you have to put a little bit of thought into your responses, otherwise you can sound like a jerk. At the grocery store when the cashier is done checking you out they'll usually say, “Have a great day!” to which I respond, “You too.” When I run into an old friend at school and they say, “It's good to see you again man.” I will say, “You too.” "You too" in 75% of situations is a good brainless but nice thing to say to someone.
“You too” will, however, sometimes make you look like a jerk. For example I was at Seattle's Best the other day with my wife and after the barista made us our Caramel Apple Spice he said, “Enjoy!” I promptly replied, “You too! -I mean enjoy working -I mean... uh... nevermind” I felt bad that I had rubbed in the fact that I was relaxing and enjoying a delicious Caramel Apple Spice at his expense.
At my old job I couldn't take a break until someone came back and covered for me. When I finally got relieved for my break my less-fortunate co-worker would inevitably say, as I was taking my apron off, “Have a great break!” to which I would brainlessly respond “You too... I mean you are not taking a break so, nevermind.”
So my hypothesis is if you are going to brainlessly respond “you too” to someone, make sure they are not in a less-fortunate situation than you.
